Paeonian Coins (450 BCE)

For translation methodology see: How to Translate Alphabetic Akkadian Texts

(June 10, 2023) Coins from a horde allegedly found in Paeonia which together form a battle sequence from left to right. Coin hoards seem to represent wealth used for state to state transactions or tribute outside of classical civilization areas so they can have old coins no longer in general circulation. The center coin (16) shows the full text. The other coins have the short version of the text. The coins indicates some sort of conflict was happening when they were minted.  This lettering is a mix of Greek and Etruscan so probably dates to 450 BCE.  Image and research paper from: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/a-ct-collaboration-paeonians-celts.392714/

This map shows the natural alliances among the Greeks at the start of the Peloponnesian war (431–404 BCE) most likely based upon ethnic kinship. The territory of the pink Greeks included Attica, the Aegean Islands, and western Anatolia which was Ionia (composed of Phrygia, Lydia) and Caria. Paeonia was north of Macedonia and not considered Greek by later Athenians.
The Athenians considered those on the Aegean Islands to be descended from a pre-Greek people they call the Leleges (singular or Lelegoi (Λέλεγες) (plural) meaning "Desirers of Energy" in Akkadian from LL.G. (Herodotus book 171:1-3
  • (1) Harpagus, after subjugating Ionia, made an expedition against the Carians, Caunians, and Lycians, taking Ionians and Aeolians with him. (2) Of these, the Carians have come to the mainland from the islands; for in the past they were islanders, called Leleges and under the rule of Minos, not (as far as I can learn by report) paying tribute, but manning ships for him when he needed them. (3) Since Minos had subjected a good deal of territory for himself and was victorious in war, this made the Carians too at that time by far the most respected of all nations.

Map showing the location of Pelasgoi as mentioned by ancient Greek authors. The Pelasgoi (Πελασγοί)  was a term used by ancient Greek authors to refer to the Pre-Greek people of mainland Greece. It means "Rulers of Energy's Activity" in Akkadian from PL.G.Ṣ. This word is so similar in meaning to Lelegoi that both words likely refer to the same people.
